The psychology of philosophy: Associating philosophical views with psychological traits in professional philosophers

Do psychological traits predict philosophical views? We administered the PhilPapers Survey, created by David Bourget and Chalmers, which consists of 30 views on central topics (e.g., epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, philosophy mind, language) to a sample professional philosophers (N = 314). extended survey measure number traits, such as personality, numeracy, well-being, lifestyle, life experiences. also included non-technical ‘translations’ these for eventual use in other populations. found limited no support notion that personality or demographics views. did, however, find some were predictive views, even after strict correction multiple comparisons. Findings include: higher interest numeracy predicted physicalism, naturalism, consequentialism; lower levels well-being mental illness hard determinism; using substances psychedelics marijuana non-realist subjectivist morality aesthetics; having had transformative self-transcendent experience theism idealism. discuss whether not empirical results have implications, while noting 68% our indicated findings would indeed value.
